2014 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Video

Although Cars.com reviewer David Thomas is a muscle-car fan, the 2014 Ford Mustang just isn't very exciting. Outside and under the hood, it hasn't changed much since model-year 2011 and the inside is straight from 2005. Stale design aside, the Mustang GT is blast to drive, especially top down. One place Thomas drove to a lot, however, was the gas station. He averaged just 12 mpg during his test. Check out his video above for more impressions.

Ford Wraps Fiesta in Bacon, Really

Fiesta_Bacon

I'm a fan of bacon-wrapped dates and BLTs, but that's about as far as my pork-product love goes. Ford, however, is going much, much further. In anticipation of International Bacon Day on Aug. 31, the automaker is offering Fiesta customers several different bacon wraps for the subcompact's exterior.

If it was April 1, we'd be skeptical about this news, but it's true. The wraps are produced by Ford Custom Graphics and 3M Original Wraps. Prices start at $78.75 for mini strips, $191.25 for bacon racing strips and $318.75 for a side of bacon — two strips that wrap the rear wheel hubs. You'll have to really love bacon to get the full wrap, however; it'll run you $3,347.

Why bacon? "It's no secret that bacon inspires a lot of passion, and that's what the Fiesta celebrates. Our customers have a hunger for self-expression. Plus, it's just awesome to drive down the road in a piece of bacon," Liz Elser, Ford Fiesta marketing manager, said in a statement.

We wonder if the automaker has anything in store for Toasted Marshmallow Day (Aug. 30) and Cheese Pizza Day (Sept. 5).

2014 Kia Soul Starts at $15,495

2014-kia-soul

The second generation of Kia's boxy hatchback gets longer and wider for 2014; its price also grows slightly. When the new Soul goes on sale this fall, it'll start at $15,495, a slight increase over the 2013 model's base price of $15,200 (all prices include the destination fee).

Base, Plus and Exclaim versions carryover. Base versions use a 130-horsepower, 1.6-liter four cylinder and standard six-speed manual transmission; a six-speed automatic is optional. Plus models get a 164-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated to the standard manual or optional automatic; prices start at $18,995. Topline Exclaim versions (thankfully Kia ditched the + and ! designations this year) use the same engine and a standard six-speed automatic transmission and start at $21,095.

Standards across the lineup include power windows, heated side mirrors, telescoping steering wheel, six-speaker stereo with USB input, satellite radio and Bluetooth connectivity. A new option this year is the UVO multimedia system with navigation. The 8-inch touch-screen works with Android and iPhone apps such as Pandora internet radio.

The Soul is Kia's second best-selling vehicle behind the Optima sedan. Through July of this year, the automaker has sold 73,191 Souls. Its closest competitor, the boxy Nissan Cube starts at $17,570 (including destination) and is a sales dud. Through July, Nissan sold just 3,720 units.

2013 Hyundai Azera: Car Seat Check

13Azera_main

The 2013 Hyundai Azera is a full-size sedan that can seat five passengers, but when it comes to child-safety seats, it — like many cars — can hold only two of them. The backseat has lots of legroom, which allowed for easy installation of our rear-facing child-safety seats.

How many car seats fit in the second row? Two

What We Like

  • Both the rear-facing infant and convertible seats had plenty of space in the backseat.
  • The Azera's seat bolsters held the booster seat in place.
  • The three tether anchors on the rear shelf are easy to access and use.

What We Don't

  • Stiff leather seat cushions blocked access to the two sets of lower Latch anchors, which are buried about an inch into the seat cushions. The seat belt buckles also block access to the anchors.
  • The seat belt buckles are floppy and fell behind the booster seat, making it difficult for kids to buckle up independently.

13Azera_Latch

13Azera_IS

13Azera_RFC

13Azera_FFC

13Azera_booster

Grading System

A: Plenty of room for the car seat and the child; doesn't impact driver or front-passenger legroom. Easy to find and connect to Latch and tether anchors. No fit issues involving head restraint or seat contouring. Easy access to the third row.

B: Plenty of room. One fit or connection issue. Some problems accessing third row when available.

C: Marginal room. Two fit or connection issues. Difficult to access third row when available.

D: Insufficient room. Two or more fit or connection issues.

F: Does not fit or is unsafe.

About Cars.com's Car Seat Checks

Editors Jennifer Geiger and Jennifer Newman are certified child safety seat installation technicians.

For the Car Seat Check, we use a Graco SnugRide 30 infant-safety seat, a Britax Roundabout convertible seat and Graco TurboBooster seat. The front seats are adjusted for a 6-foot driver and a 5-foot-8 passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver's seat, and the infant and convertible seats are installed behind the front passenger seat.

We also install the forward-facing convertible in the second row's middle seat with the booster and infant seat in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit; a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. If there's a third row, we install the booster seat and a forward-facing convertible.

Parents should also remember that they can use the Latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat.

2014 Honda Odyssey Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award

2014-odyssey-iihs

The hits keep rolling for Honda's minivan. Cars.com's 2013 Family Car of the Year pick continues to rack up the accolades; today, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced that the 2014 Odyssey earned its top score, the Top Safety Pick+ award, and is the first minivan to do so.

In front, side, rear and rollover crashes, the Odyssey earned a score of Good; it was also the first minivan to undergo the agency's tough new small front overlap test, acing this crash as well.

The Odyssey was lightly updated for 2014 and although its exterior styling carries over unchanged, its structure has been updated, the IIHS said. New, more advanced high-strength steel door frames, floor pan and wheel wells make the passenger compartment more rigid, the agency reported. In its report, the IIHS also notes that the side curtain airbags extend farther forward for better head protection.

"Injury measures on the dummy indicated a low risk of injury in a crash of this severity. Because the structure helped keep the steering column stable, the front airbag stayed in front of the driver dummy during the crash to provide good protection," it said in a statement.

Although other minivans haven't undergone the small front overlap test and thus don't qualify for the Top Safety Pick+ designation, many of the Odyssey's competitors are Top Safety Picks, including model-year 2013 versions of the Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan.

Cars.com Names Top 10 Tailgaters

Tailgating

It's already late summer, and increasingly your day revolves around trolling sports websites for the latest news on training camps, preseason college football power rankings, alma-mater rivalries and so on. Alabama or LSU? Steelers or Ravens?

The season of pigskin bliss is upon us, and the truly serious fans have tickets, and many of those serious ticket holders tailgate. Which brings us to Cars.com's annual Top 10 Tailgaters — our top picks for cars to hit the stadium lots and pregame 'til the brats run out.

As always, please tailgate responsibly, and check out our list below.

IMG_7144

The Best Tailgater: 2013 Ram 1500
Thanks to a host of tailgate-friendly updates, the tough-looking Ram 1500 is this year's winner. A new, available air suspension for 2013 allows owners to conquer those off-pavement tailgates and then lower their truck to parking height for easier access to the bed and its contents. Speaking of which, the Ram 1500's optional RamBox cargo management system keeps getting better. It has covered, weatherproof bedside containers that Chrysler says can store up to 280 12-ounce cans plus ice. Because they line the bed, those mobile coolers allow your friends to start the revelry while you unload your grill, which the Ram's adjustable tie-down cleats and bed divider (both included with the RamBox Package) should help keep secure en route to the game. During the tailgate party, the Ram 1500's available Uconnect WiFi — new for 2013 and a reasonable $10 for single-day access — allows your crew to set their fantasy football lineups via a private internet network accessible within 150 feet of the truck. Anyone who's tried to fight 60,000 fans for a smartphone signal will thank you for that. When kickoff approaches, those RamBox containers have handy drain plugs, and they lock by key-fob remote (another addition for 2013) to keep any away-team fans from declaring Miller time at your expense.

Winner's Circle

2014-Chevrolet-SuburbanLTZ-004

2014 Chevrolet Suburban
For those who need to haul the most passengers and gear, the Suburban can't be beat. The tried-and-true SUV styling will earn respect from nearby tailgaters for good reason. With an available front bench seat, this SUV can accommodate up to nine fans plus a minivan-beating 45.8 cubic feet of grills, coolers and chairs behind the third row. That's about as much as a Ford Focus hatchback can swallow with its rear seats down. Get the Suburban with four-wheel drive, and its 9.2 inches of ground clearance should keep those parking blocks from clocking a bumper.

2013_Chrysler_T&C

2013 Chrysler Town & Country
Yes, minivans are something of a pregame embarrassment — the automotive equivalent to the Seahawks' new death-by-Nike uniforms. But get beyond that, and they rule. Take the Town & Country, which boasts impressive cargo room and powered rear tailgate seats. What's more, Chrysler claims a segment-exclusive rear entertainment setup: two flip-down screens viewable from behind the open liftgate with separate programmability plus Blu-ray, HDMI and USB ports. That means you can play Madden, watch "Rudy" in high-definition or stream pregame coverage off a smartphone and the Town & Country's available Uconnect WiFi.

2014_Honda_Odyssey_Touring_Elite_11

2014 Honda Odyssey
The Odyssey has all the minivan goods: a best-in-class 93.1 cubic feet of cargo room behind the second row, plus a widescreen entertainment screen visible from behind an open tailgate with HDMI inputs and separate left/right programming. New for 2014 is the Odyssey's available HondaVac system, whose powerful ShopVac makes cleaning up those mashed-in corn chips a breeze. We tested it at the 2013 New York International Auto Show, and we can assure you it sucks like most of the AFC West.

23_2013_Ridgeline_Sport

2013 Honda Ridgeline
A perennial tailgating choice, the Ridgeline returns for 2013 thanks to its in-bed trunk, whose drainable 8.5 cubic feet ensures that you can leave the cooler at home. Fold the crew cab's backseat cushions up and you get enough vertical storage to fit a small grill. New for 2013, a standard rearview camera (available last year in the topmost trim only) should help you back into those tight tailgate spots.

Honorable Mentions

14FLEX_LTD_Susent_Bridge

2014 Ford Flex
The Flex boasts a decent 20 cubic feet of space behind the third row, so an efficient packer could cram a small grill and coolers behind as many as seven fans. (An efficient Packer, by contrast, would do all that and find extra space to cram in a foam cheese head.) Unlike many three-row SUVs, the Flex's third row fits adults in reasonable comfort. Pull up to the game, and that third row converts to a rear-facing tailgate seat.

2014-GMC-Acadia-SLT-029

2014 GMC Acadia
If you hate minivans but love their utility, the three-row Acadia boasts a vanlike 24.1 cubic feet of tailgate-ready storage in back. It also has available cargo-area stereo controls, which means you can plug (and charge) your iPhone up front while manning the playlist out back. Sure, Bluetooth streaming audio enables the same thing, but it's also a quick route to a dead battery — a problem when you want to text your buddies at home after that fourth-quarter comeback.

32_2012_Fit_Sport

2013 Honda Fit
A repeat, if unlikely, candidate, the Fit's small size hides some surprising cargo room: 20.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and nearly 60 cubic feet if you fold them down. Honda's second-row Magic Seat has cushions that flip up, which leaves a high enough storage area to throw in a small grill. The hatchback's maneuverability can help away fans can slip out unnoticed, which might be for the best, given certain rivalries. It also has the best mileage in this group, so you can save money for other needs.

IMG_0525

2014 Subaru Forester
The redesigned Forester preserves its nameplate's excellent visibility with tall windows and narrow pillars. For a small SUV with standard all-wheel drive and good cargo room (31.5 to 34.4 cubic feet behind the backseat, depending on trim), the Subie has sightlines that should keep nearby tailgates well within view. The big win? Up-level models have a removable cargo tray in back, which helps a lot with post-partying cleanup.

IMG_4242

2013 Toyota Sienna
There's a common thread here. Minivans are the Southeastern Conference of tailgating vehicles. The Sienna stands out for one thing, and that's cargo room. We're talking a gargantuan 150 cubic feet with the third row stowed and the second row removed. That's better than any other minivan or SUV. If you tailgate near public transit, tell your tailgaters to meet you there — and load up for the ultimate asphalt party.

Nissan To Offer Autonomous Cars by 2020

D21F1068

Roads could look very different in the year 2020 if Nissan's plans for an autonomous fleet of vehicles becomes a reality. The automaker announced that it hopes to have multiple, commercially-viable autonomous drive vehicles on the road by 2020.

Nissan has begun working on the development of driverless cars through partnerships with MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Oxford and the University of Tokyo. It is also building the first dedicated, purpose-built autonomous drive proving ground; the facility in Japan will feature brick townscapes and real roads.

Nissan says there's a need for the technology, citing rising traffic and crash statics. "Six million crashes in the U.S. per year cost $160 billion and rank as the top reason of death for 4- to 34-year-olds. And, 93% of accidents in the U.S. are due to human error, typically due to inattention," it said in a statement.

The technology can't be cheap, but Nissan says otherwise. "Nissan's autonomous driving will be achieved at realistic prices for consumers. The goal is availability across the model range within two vehicle generations," the automaker said in a statement.

Nissan isn't the first automaker or company to explore driverless cars. Google has been developing the technology for years, as have other automakers such as Audi.

While the dangers of the driverless cars are obvious, some states are ready; in 2011, Nevada passed legislation that would allow autonomous cars to operate on its highways. Earlier this summer, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began drafting driverless-car safety guidelines for the U.S.

Gas Prices Down Ahead of Labor Day Weekend

Gas_prices

Heading into Labor Day weekend, gas prices have dropped 21 cents versus year-ago levels. A gallon of regular unleaded gasoline averaged $3.54 nationally on Tuesday, according to AAA. A year ago it was $3.75 — a record at the time as oil-refinery issues and the Gulf Coast's Hurricane Isaac tightened oil supply, AAA spokesman Michael Green said.

This year is a lot different.

"If you look at, for example, last week and year-ago comparisons based on supply and demand, [we] were up in demand a little more than 1%, but supply was up 8%," Green said. "There's plenty to meet most motorists' needs. There has not been a major Gulf Coast hurricane, and refineries have been running smoothly."

So go ahead and spring for that poolside motel room. But you might want to keep the TV on the news — and knock on wood for good measure. The supply-and-demand situation means fuel prices should begin to ease. But the Atlantic hurricane season, which poses the biggest threat to Gulf Coast refineries, is only about halfway through. And the specter of a military strike in Syria threatens oil production in the ever-tenuous Middle East. Add it all together, and pump prices have slid some but not a lot.

"Syria is not a producer of oil," Green said. "There are no shipments that go through Syria. What people should be concerned about are the ramifications for the rest of the Middle East if U.S. strikes cause increased turmoil."

He pointed to Egypt, where a military coup ousted President Mohammed Morsi on July 3. Egyptian oil production is scant, yet the uprising sent West Texas Intermediate crude oil — one of two benchmarks for how much you pay at the pump — past $100 a barrel. Gas prices followed, rising 19 cents between July 8 and July 22, according to the Energy Information Administration.

At least drivers have seen some recent relief. WTI remains beyond the $100 mark, but gas prices have subsided through late July and August. Between July 22 and Aug. 26, a gallon of regular unleaded fell 13 cents per gallon, EIA data shows.

Will retailers crank up prices because of increased holiday traffic? After all, AAA predicts Labor Day travel will increase 4.2% over 2012's figures, with 34.1 million Americans traveling between Aug. 29 and Sept. 2. And the agency says 85% of them, or 29.2 million Americans, will drive at least 50 miles.

Don't lose sleep over it, Green said. "The popular perception is that gas stations will raise rates going into a major holiday, but that's often not the case," he said. "If you look at July 4 this year, for example, a major holiday that we track, gas prices dropped 21 days in a row for a total of 16 cents per gallon heading into the holiday. For Memorial Day this year, they dropped five days in a row for 3 cents per gallon."

What to Drive to the World's Biggest Classic-Car Cruise

SRTViper7

The Woodward Dream Cruise happens every year on the third Saturday in August as it has since 1995, when a group of volunteers decided to try and relive their youth from the 1950s and 1960s, back when evening entertainment in the Motor City often involved aimlessly cruising up and down the well-known street.

What to Drive to Your High School Reunion

The street is M-1, Woodward Avenue, stretching 25 miles from the heart of Detroit into the suburb of Pontiac, crossing a dozen communities and the sites of many former drive-in restaurants. Since its humble beginning, the event has become the largest classic-car gathering in the world, with this year's event reportedly drawing 1.5 million people and more than 60,000 classic and modern specialty cars over the course of roughly a week. It is the ultimate event for the classic-car enthusiast, and the perfect place to take a classic, interesting or just plain fun car.

It just so happened this year that I had a test car that met all three descriptors. In a sea of extraordinary muscle cars, classic rarities and outrageous iron, what could possibly make the spectators sitting on the side of the road drop their Big Gulps, quickly whip out cameras, yell encouragement, flash thumbs-up and even in one case burst into applause en masse?

How about the redesigned 2013 SRT Viper GTS coupe in stunning, eye-popping Stryker Red Tinted Pearl?

The folks at Chrysler figured the Viper and the Dream Cruise would be a good match, and they weren't kidding — I have never driven a car that received this much attention. It's a 10-cylinder, rumbling, snorting, snarling beast of a sports car. Even amid tens of thousands of amazing cars driving (or in many cases sitting and idling in traffic) up and down Woodward Avenue, absolutely everyone gave the Viper some love.

To see how it went, scroll through our photo story below.

SRTViper1

Imagine waking up in the morning to find that this has slithered onto your driveway! The 2013 SRT Viper GTS coupe, equipped with an 8.4-liter V-10 making 640 horsepower and 600 pounds-feet of torque. The redesigned 2013 is a kinder, gentler Viper in much the same way that Raul Castro is a kinder, gentler Castro.

SRTViper2

Before heading to the Dream Cruise, you gotta wash off the bugs and grime that accumulate at seriously fast speeds! Automatic car wash? Not on your life — this Viper is covered in Stryker Red Tinted Pearl paint, a (get ready for this) $14,600 option. That is not a typo.

SRTViper3

Starting the day off in enemy territory, the Viper visits the GM Heritage Center for a press breakfast. GM maintains a secret museum that isn't open to the public, but sometimes media folks are allowed in for special events. The bright yellow Opel GT belongs to the global quality communications guy at GM.

Any time you get invited to visit the GM Heritage Center, you go. The company has a collection of more than 400 significant, concept, one-off prototype and production cars from its 100-plus years of history, a rotating hundred or so of which are on display at any given time.

SRTViper5

Out onto Woodward, where you see all sorts of metal at the Dream Cruise. Regardless of what people were driving, all eyes fixated on the Viper as it rumbled past.

SRTViper6

The view out isn't an easy one — a super-low roof means you're always hunched down to see out of the bunker-slit windshield, and stoplights can only be viewed by their reflections on the Viper's shapely hood. Please don't comment about the safety of taking pictures behind the wheel. Average speed at the Woodward Dream Cruise is actually walking pace, so thick is the traffic.

SRTViper7

I'd stop and stare too, if I saw me rolling by! Aside from the Crusher Orange Viper TA at the Chrysler display (all automakers rent out huge areas for vehicle displays and parties), mine was the only 2013 SRT Viper I saw all weekend.

SrtViper8

Politicians use the Woodward Dream Cruise as great free advertising for local votes. Here, one of Michigan's prospective U.S. Senate candidates makes a subtle appeal for support. Hint: She's not representing the Green Party.

SRTViper9

While 2013 models were scarce, previous model years were out! Here's a beautiful fourth-generation Viper SRT-10 rolling by.

SRTViper10

Finding parking along Woodward Avenue during the Dream Cruise will either cost you serious coin or generally be impossible. Unless, of course, you have a brand-new Viper and roll up to the Chrysler display. VIP parking? Don't mind if I do!

SRTViper11

That 8.4-liter V-10 puts out some serious heat. How serious? After cruising (actually, sitting in traffic) all morning and parking for lunch, a fly landed on the hood of the Viper — and promptly expired.

SRTViper12

Chrysler had a huge parking lot in a key spot filled with significant vehicles from the past and present. Here's the 2013 SRT Viper TA (for "Time Attack") — a track-focused, hard-edged version of the Viper intended to slot in between the base and the GTS.

SRTViper15

That hot V-10 engine and those side-exit exhausts can cook you in a hurry, especially in bumper-to-bumper cruise traffic. We took a break to cool off both man and machine with frosty chocolate milkshakes.

SRTViper16

Dinner at one of the Detroit area's hottest new eateries. The new Viper gets special parking placement from the valets on account of, well, being a new Viper.

SRTViper17

It was an amazing weekend in a fantastic car. And lest you think that my life is all supercars and luxury rides, here's what I swapped the Viper for the subsequent week. Balance is important, I suppose.

How Long Should a Car's Light Bulbs Last?

ChangingBulbs

It stands to reason that the more often you use the various lights on your vehicle, the sooner you will have to replace them. If you always drive with your headlights on, for example, you can expect the bulbs to burn out sooner than if you only occasionally drive at night.

The type of bulb also is a factor. Halogen headlights, for example, aren't supposed to last as long as xenon high-intensity-discharge lights, though the latter are far more expensive. LEDs are said to last longer than either (and use less energy), but depending on the type and number required are more expensive than either halogen or high-intensity-discharge.

Sylvania, a major manufacturer of bulbs for automotive applications, says that the life of any bulb also depends on the amount of voltage a vehicle operates on. Some manufacturers have bumped up the voltage to handle all of the additional electrical loads on modern vehicles. The higher voltage can shorten a bulb's life. Frequently driving over rough, bumpy roads also can shorten halogen bulb life by damaging the filaments.

Though you may not notice, as bulbs age they don't generate as much light as when they were new. That means your headlights may still work after five or six years, but they may not be as bright or illuminate as much of the road as they used to. If you have to replace any bulb (or decide to before they burn out), check your owner's manual to see what bulb is called for. If you're a do-it-yourselfer, you should save money by replacing bulbs yourself. Information should be in your owner's manual on this. Some headlight bulbs are extremely difficult to get at, and you may have to remove a battery or reach the bulb through a wheel well, so check this out as well before you decide to do it yourself. You might be able to find helpful tips online from others who have done it.

When you shop for headlight bulbs, you will probably discover that several are available for your car at different prices based on claims of brighter, whiter, longer, etc. Read the fine print. Sylvania says its Silver Star bulbs are 35% to 50% brighter than standard halogens but "may have a shorter life span." The company says the average life of Silver Star bulbs is "approximately one year."

Study: Fort Collins, Colo., Has Safest Drivers; D.C. Remains Worst

Ft_Collins

A new report finds America's safest drivers are in Fort Collins, Colo., while the least-safe are in the nation's capital. In Allstate Insurance Co.'s annual Allstate America's Best Drivers Report, the Colorado city (pictured) — about 65 miles north of Denver — earns the safest title among the 194 cities ranked. The insurer says its study found drivers in Fort Collins should average 13.9 years between collisions, which is 28.2% less likely than the national average. Boise, Idaho; Sioux Falls, N.D.; Brownsville, Texas; and Madison, Wis., round out the top five best-driver cities, with accident frequency ranging from 12.5 years to 13.9 years.

"We know that about the national average for the time a driver has [an accident] is about every 10 years," Allstate spokeswoman Kate Hollcraft told us. "We're looking at drivers in all of those cities as compared to the national average."

Fort Collins was No. 3 in Allstate's 2012 report, but it held the top spot in 2010 and 2011 — and placed second from 2006 to 2009. By contrast, Washington, D.C., had the worst drivers in the 2013 report, with a predicted average of just 4.8 years per driver between accidents. That's 109.3% higher than the national average. A slew of East Coast cities — among them Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, Providence, R.I., and Newark, N.J. — ranked in the bottom 25.

The nation's capital has harbored the worst drivers from 2008 to 2012, according to Allstate. In fact, in the study's nine years, Washington ranked last all but twice. "They've got a lot of people and a lot of cars in a small space," Hollcraft said. "There are always a lot of factors that go into [the rankings], so we can't say that it's one or two. But there's absolutely something to be said for cities that are more compact or more densely populated."

Still, sprawling Southern California had a few cities among Allstate's bottom 25, including Los Angeles and two suburbs (Fullerton and Glendale). Perhaps traffic promotes bad driving. Traffic information provider INRIX named Los Angeles the country's most-traffic congested city in 2013. And six of INRIX's most congested 10 cities ranked in the bottom 35 of Allstate's study.

Allstate says it excluded all of Massachusetts due to limited data availability, so we don't know how Boston — INRIX's 10th most congested city — rates. The insurer claims to have about 10% of all U.S. auto insurance policies. It based the study on two years' data to minimize the effects of phenomena like a bad winter or a long summer construction season, and the list reflects weighted averages of property-damage claims.

"Damage [is] not necessarily to property but to the car," Hollcraft said. The insurer weeded out theft or incidental damage, like a tree branch falling on a parked vehicle, "so we're really looking at someone's driving habits."

Infiniti Q30 Concept Blends Coupe, Hatchback and Crossover Styles

Q30_500

Infiniti set its sights directly at younger premium buyers with its just-announced Q30 premium compact concept debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The automaker released a single image of the concept before its introduction. Following the hierarchy of Infiniti's new naming convention, the Q30 slots below the Infiniti Q50 sedan in its passenger-car lineup; SUVs wear QX names.

With the car, Infiniti intends to defy traditional body styles of the premium compact segment, which includes vehicles like the BMW X1, Acura ILX, Volvo C30 and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class. In a statement, Infiniti says the Q30 is a blend of a coupe, hatchback and crossover designed for younger customers who are "seeking an alternative to traditional premium compact vehicles and open to convention-challenging approaches."

We definitely see the hatchback influence, and Infiniti says it equates to roominess on the inside. Also present is the higher stance of a crossover SUV, but coupe styling? Not so much, despite Infiniti's claim that the dynamic design and sportiness comes from coupe influence. That's not necessarily a bad thing given the already attractive, albeit Mazda-like, design of the Q30. We'll have to wait for more information when the Q30 debuts at the Frankfurt Motor Show on Sept. 10.

2013 Subaru BRZ: Road-Trip Report

IMG_0275
Our long-term 2013 Subaru BRZ routinely slogs through Chicago's epic bumper-to-bumper traffic, so we're thrilled whenever the chance arises to leave the city, pop the shifter into 6th and set the cruise control to highway speeds.

Follow Our Long-Term Fleet

The BRZ's appearance gives little indication it would succeed on road trips. There's no way the sports coupe should be comfortable with its low-profile tires, a low ride height, short wheelbase and cramped-looking interior. None of those problems prevented our editors from taking the BRZ on road trips, but did their spines return intact?

Spending hours in the BRZ isn't painful for the same reason we don't mind grinding through rush-hour traffic: the seats. Every editor who's spent extended time in the car — whether in traffic or on the highway cruising — praised the BRZ's Alcantara-clad butt-huggers.

"I think the seats went a long way toward keeping me comfortable," says Cars.com editor Bill Jackson, who spent roughly eight hours road-tripping in the BRZ. "I don't like seats that are too soft, and, ideally, I like a heavily bolstered seat that supports a lot of my body."

The BRZ's front seats are heavily bolstered and firm, but not uncomfortably so, with support in the right places. Stepping up to the top Limited trim level over the base BRZ Premium adds heated, leather-bolstered Alcantara front seats. Cars.com editor Robby DeGraff spent 400-plus miles in those seats:

"What surprised me was how comfortable the seats were, even after hours upon hours of driving. They don't look that comfortable but once in that driver's seat, I felt snug and sound," says DeGraff.

IMG_9856

Even though the front seats make the stiffly sprung BRZ more tolerable on long drives, its signature athletic, fun-to-drive demeanor impacts ride quality. Jackson encountered bumpy stretches of highway in his time road-tripping in the BRZ. "On the roughest stretches, yes, I did feel like I was catching air in the BRZ, but I never felt uncomfortable or like I was about to break the car."

"The BRZ is a high-strung car on the highway," says Cars.com editor Joe Bruzek. "It's great fun with such communicative steering, but double griping the steering wheel on the highway grows old after a few hours of keeping the BRZ from darting around."

Bruzek also grew tired of the road and wind noise. "Some roads it can glide along silently, while others require drowning out the road noise by turning the volume knob to 11," he says.

Almost as important as driving comfort on road trips is having enough room for all your gear. The BRZ doesn't disappoint with its folding rear seats.

"All the trips I've taken the BRZ on were multiple-day stays where I brought food, a cooler, luggage, slow cooker, folding chairs and more. When the trunk alone wasn't enough, the folding rear seat allowed excess luggage to spill into the passenger compartment," says Bruzek.

Brz_road_trip

The most quantifiable evaluation of the BRZ as a road-tripper is fuel economy and the BRZ impresses; it's not hard to exceed the EPA's 30 mpg highway rating. Our highest-recorded mileage of 35.94 mpg from fill-up calculations and 37.3 mpg from the trip computer came from DeGraff's road trip. Fill-ups are frequent with the tiny 13.2-gallon tank, however. The most fuel we've put in the BRZ at one fill-up was 11.25 gallons of premium. Most don't mind the small tank, which gives us further reason to find a curvy off-ramp on the way to the pump.

At the end of their individual road trips, could our editors have kept driving? "Three to four hours is about as long as I'd want to spend road-tripping the BRZ," Bruzek says. "It's not from seating comfort, but rather with how high-strung the car rides."

Jackson was more than happy to hop in the car again for a longer trip, "I'll put it this way: If we can figure out a way to carry skis in that car, I'd gladly volunteer to drive it to Denver this winter."

2014 Toyota Corolla Starts at $17,610

2014_Corolla_S_002

Toyota's compact sedan enters model-year 2014 fully redesigned with edgier styling, a revised powertrain and affordable prices. When the 2014 Corolla goes on sale this fall, it'll start at $17,610, including destination. That's $570 more than the 2013 Corolla in base LE trim, but prices for other trims decrease for 2014.

Available models include base L, LE, S and the new LE Eco trim. Under the hood is a revised version of the 2013's 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. It's standard on L, LE and S trim levels. The LE Eco uses the same engine but with a new type of continuous valve timing to improve efficiency. Toyota said in a statement that the LE Eco will return 42 mpg on the highway, "giving it the best highway fuel economy in the class for a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission," (excluding EVs, hybrids and diesels). This marks a big jump from the 2013 Corolla's disappointing fuel economy: 26/34/29 mpg city/highway/combined.

The base price is for the L model with the new six-speed manual transmission; standards include LED low-beam headlamps and daytime running lights, Bluetooth connectivity and eight airbags. A driver-knee airbag and passenger seat cushion airbag are new this year. The L version with the four-speed automatic starts at $18,210.

Midlevel LE models add a backup camera, automatic climate control, cruise control, keyless entry, a 6.1-inch touch-screen with the Entune multimedia system and a continuously variable automatic  transmission. This version offers more features than the outgoing LE for a minor price increase; the 2014 LE starts at $19,110 — $120 more than the model-year 2013 version.

The sport-oriented S model starts at $19,810, $60 less than last year's S version. Additions to this trim include more aggressive front styling, a specific suspension, paddle shifters, a sport gauge cluster, glossy black interior and exterior trim, sport seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

At the top of the lineup, the LE Eco model starts at $19,510. Options across the board include a moonrooof, navigation, push-button start and Softex faux leather seats and surfaces.

Kia's Hamsters Hit the Gym With Lady Gaga

Kia's Soul is getting a makeover for 2014 and so are the car's mascots. The portly fur-balls are hitting the gym in the automaker's newest ad. Although Kia's compact hatchback grows slightly bigger inside and out, the hamsters slim down in the spot, titled "Totally Transformed."

Kia's been relying on funky fur to sell cars since 2009, and it doesn't sound like the automaker has plans to change its ad campaign anytime soon. "When the first Soul arrived on the scene, everyone at Kia believed we had a hit on our hands but we didn't realize how big that hit was going to be, and our year-over-year success is a direct result of the hamster commercials entertaining the young and young-at-heart with their baggy clothes, excellent taste in music and slick dance moves," Michael Sprague, Kia's spokesman, said in a statement.

With Lady Gaga headlining the new commercial, however, the hamsters' taste this time is questionable, but the Soul's past sales success is not. It's been a strong seller for the brand since its debut. The updated for 2014 Kia Soul goes on sale this fall.

What to Drive to Your High School Reunion

MBenz6

One perk about being an automotive writer and testing all sorts of new cars is getting to fool the general public into thinking I own whatever I happen to be driving. And let's face it, there's no better place to do that than a high school reunion. One of my personal heroes in this business pulled up to his reunion picnic in a Ford GT. So when it came time for me to attend my own 20-year high school reunion in suburban St. Louis I landed a bit of luck myself: a 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG.

It's practically the perfect car to take on a reunion road trip. It's the most expensive car Mercedes-Benz sells in the U.S., equipped with just two seats, a convertible hardtop, dramatic styling and a truly extraordinary rarity — one of the industry's last V-12 engines, a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter monster making 621 horsepower and a jaw-dropping 738 pounds-feet of torque. That's zero-to-60 mph in 3.9 seconds. That's around $223,000 including destination. Perfect!

Of course, most of my reunion friends follow me on Facebook, so they knew the car wasn't mine. That didn't stop me from having a great adventure in it. Scroll down to see how it went.

MBenz1

Here's what arrived in my driveway: A 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG in matte silver paint with a red leather and carbon fiber interior. The king of the AMGs, as a friend put it. MSRP: $223,465.

Mbenzroof

Of all the features in the SL65, this may be the coolest: Magic Sky Control. With the push of a button, the glass convertible roof goes from transparent to darkened in seconds. Magic, indeed!

MBenz5

This is just about all that fits in the trunk if you plan on being able to put the top down. A cover snaps down over your luggage to make sure the retractable hardtop won't impact anything you have stored in there. If the cover doesn't fit perfectly, the top won't go down.

MBenz6

Midwestern scenery can be pretty — you just need to know where to look, like this covered bridge in Ohio.

MBenz7

The SL65 takes premium, and the tank isn't overly large, meaning highway trips require fairly frequent gas stops. We got about 20 mpg while cruising at about 75 mph, not too shabby for such a huge motor.

MBenz8

The map system needs a bit of an update. Twice — in northwest Ohio and suburban St. Louis — relatively new highways where none existed a couple of years ago confounded the navigation system, which said we were driving through cornfields.

MBenz9

There's lots of World's Largest Things throughout the Midwest. Here, the SL65 visits the World's Largest Ball of Paint (more than 23,000 coats of Sherwin-Williams) ...

MBenz10

... the World's Largest Bottle of Catsup ...

MBenz11

... the World's Largest Wind Chime ...

MBenz12

... and the World's Largest Can of Campbell's Soup! World's Largest Grilled Cheese nowhere to be found, sadly.

MBenz13

One of these is a fire-breathing aluminum dragon. The other is just some sculpture we found.

MBenz14

Finally, arriving at the 20-year reunion for the Parkway Central High Class of '93. Everyone got a ride in the silver beast; it was a big hit!
